Less than a decade ago, diamond cutting in Israel was done much the way it had been around the world for generations. The considerable expertise required at every stage of the process made diamond polishing a labor-intensive industry.
All of that changed with amazing speed. "Seven or eight years ago, everything we did was brand-new and was received with a lot of surprise," recalled Akiva Caspi, manager of the Technology and Training Center of the Israel Diamond Institute.
Today, virtually the entire diamond cutting industry in Israel is automated, and the country supplies much of the world with advanced polishing equipment. Caspi estimates that there are about 30 companies active in the field in Israel.
